© Ben Cawthra. Nigel carrying out repair work to woodwork for a ride in the yard. This series of images documents the colourful people that work for and with the Carters Steam Fair, while on tour around the south of England and back at their yard where they maintain and restore the rides and attractions. Established in 1976 by John Carter (1942 - 2000), family run Carter??s Steam Fair, based near Maidenhead in Berkshire, travels the spring and summer months around the UK offering a glimpse of steam powered history to the public. The fair showcases rides dating back almost 120 years, with the centre piece ride, The Gallopers, dating back to 1895. The gallopers was the first ride bought by the Carter family in 1976. All of the rides are carefully hand painted and can take days to construct. A full list of Carters Steam Fair schedule can be found at www.carterssteamfair.co.uk/p/carters-diary.html.
